A routine construction project in Belgium turned into an extraordinary discovery after workers uncovered a hidden cache of gold estimated to be worth approximately €9 million—more than US$10 million.

The remarkable discovery was made on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, Belgium, roughly 30 kilometers northwest of Brussels. Workers were carrying out renovation and sewer-related work at a historic property connected to a former brewery when they encountered the concealed treasure. 

From an Ordinary Construction Job to a Multimillion-Dollar Discovery

Among the crew was an 18-year-old student worker named Kobe, who was working a summer construction job.

According to reports, the workers initially noticed what appeared to be ordinary coins while excavating. But as they continued, they realized they had stumbled upon something far more valuable: gold.

Authorities were contacted shortly after the discovery.

Police photographs showed an extraordinary collection consisting of 49 gold bars and hundreds of gold coins. Some reports have placed the number of coins in the thousands. The treasure was catalogued by authorities and transferred to a high-security government facility for safekeeping. 

Where Was the Gold Hidden?

The treasure was discovered at a historic property associated with a former brewery and the Van Assche family.

The site dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Brewing reportedly began there in 1899 and continued until 1970.

The property is now being renovated by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a social welfare organization, for offices and housing.

Reports indicate that the gold had been deliberately concealed beneath or within the cellar area, allowing the fortune to remain hidden until the construction work exposed it.

Who Owns the $10 Million Gold Treasure?

That question has yet to be answered.

The workers did not simply divide the treasure among themselves. Instead, they notified the relevant authorities, and the gold was secured while investigators began trying to determine where it came from and who legally owns it.

The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office is reportedly examining the origin of the gold, including whether it could be stolen property or connected to criminal activity.

Potential ownership claims could involve the property’s current owner, the construction workers or descendants of previous owners, depending on what investigators establish and how Belgian law applies. 

One theory is that the gold may have belonged to the wealthy Van Assche family, which was historically connected to the brewery property. However, that connection has not been officially established, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Gold has been used as a store of wealth across civilizations for thousands of years. Unlike many physical possessions, properly stored gold can remain intact for generations.
