Australia’s Perth Mint Creates World’s Largest Gold Bar — Weighing an Incredible 521.2kg

Australia has made gold history.
The Perth Mint in Western Australia has officially created the world’s largest gold bar, weighing an extraordinary 521.2 kilograms (1,149 pounds) and refined to 99.999% purity.
The bar achieved the Guinness World Records title on July 9, 2026, at The Perth Mint Refinery, surpassing the previous record of 300 kilograms by more than 200 kilograms.
More Than Half a Tonne of Gold
At 521.2 kilograms, the record-breaking bar weighs as much as more than 521 standard one-kilogram gold bars.
Its purity is equally remarkable. The bar was refined to 99.999% purity, sometimes called “five nines” purity. Perth Mint Chief Executive Paul Graham noted that 99.99% is a more common industry benchmark, making the combination of extraordinary size and exceptional purity a significant technical achievement.
More Than 35 Specialists Made It Possible
Producing a gold bar this large involved far more than simply pouring molten gold into a giant mould.
More than 35 specialists from The Perth Mint’s Refinery and Assay Laboratory participated in the project, bringing together expertise in refining, assaying, engineering and precious-metal production. Guinness World Records officials observed the process, which took up to three days.
Where Did the Gold Come From?
The bar was made entirely from Australian-origin gold contributed by nine producers:
- AngloGold Ashanti Australia
- BHP
- Evolution Mining
- Gold Fields
- Greatland Gold
- Newmont Australia
- Northern Star
- Norton Gold Fields
- Pantoro
The project therefore represents not only a Perth Mint achievement but also a showcase of Western Australia’s wider gold industry and refining capabilities.
How Much Is the World’s Largest Gold Bar Worth?
When the record was announced, Perth Mint Chief Executive Paul Graham indicated that the underlying gold alone was worth more than A$100 million.
Its ultimate value is harder to determine because it is also a unique Guinness World Records holder. The underlying metal value will continue to fluctuate with international gold prices.
Australia’s Historic Gold Achievement
Western Australia has a long history with gold, and The Perth Mint has operated for more than 125 years.
The new record demonstrates the refining technology, skilled workforce and precious-metal expertise required to produce more than half a tonne of exceptionally pure gold as a single bar.
The record-breaking bar will go on public display from late September 2026 as part of The Perth Mint Gold Tour, joining another remarkable Perth Mint attraction: its one-tonne gold coin unveiled in 2011.
A 521.2-kilogram gold bar. 99.999% purity. More than 35 specialists. Nine Australian gold producers. One Guinness World Records title.
The achievement is an extraordinary demonstration of modern gold refining and Australia’s continuing importance to the global gold industry.
